Mexico’s overall Positive Oceans Index score is 6.5, ranking it in 19st place out of 50 countries
Mexico ranks high in Marine Conservation and Protection with a score of 7.7, showing that the country is dedicated to preserve its marine estate and assets.
It also has a high Coastal Tourism Densities at 1’739 tourists per coastal kilometer and a lower Marine Estate Pressures at 19 people per square kilometer. It has 3 times as many cruise ship passengers as its coastal population. This show that its coastal and marine assets are more solicited by tourism and less by its local inhabitants.
The country has experiences rapid coastal and marine tourism growth over the past decades which has led to the development of mass tourism resorts and related activities, in particular in the Yucatan Peninsula.
